We all know that physical activity is great for helping women on a weight loss plan drop those extra pounds and improve their overall wellbeing, but a new study suggests that it can also reduce the risk of one of the most common life-threatening diseases for women: breast cancer.
Having a sedentary lifestyle is not good for your health for a number of reasons. You can start to gain weight and develop a great chance of having several ailments like type 2 diabetes, stroke or heart disease. However, new research from the American Cancer Society reveals that you don't need to start training for a marathon to reduce your chances of developing breast cancer. For ladies, even leisurely physical activity like walking will help.
Just one hour per day could mean a lessened chance of breast cancer
During the course of the study, a research team looked at more than 73,000 women between the ages of 50 to 74 starting in 1992, and then monitored their breast cancer risks up until 2009, making this one of the most in-depth studies of its kind. The researchers surveyed the women about the various types of fitness they performed over these decades, including simple leisure activities like walking, swimming, cycling, tennis and jogging.
Once the study was completed, 4,760 of these individuals ended up receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. However, the connection to physical activity and positive outcomes regarding the chances of breast cancer was also clear once the scientists crunched the numbers. During the course of the study, the research team took certain variables into account, such as body mass index and postmenopausal hormone treatments.
Women who walked around an hour per day, seven days per week, lowered their chances of developing the disease by 14 percent. Even more encouraging was the fact that women who engaged in vigorous fitness reduced their chances of breast cancer by up to 25 percent.
"Our results clearly support an association between physical activity and postmenopausal breast cancer, with more vigorous activity having a stronger effect," study author Alpa Patel said in a statement. "Our findings are particularly relevant, as people struggle with conflicting information about how much activity they need to stay healthy. Without any other recreational physical activities, walking an average of at least one hour per day was associated with a modestly lower risk of breast cancer. More strenuous and longer activities lowered the risk even more."
