Turkey trots: A healthy Thanksgiving tradition

A turkey trot can be an excellent way to connect and break a sweat during Thanksgiving.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, many Americans like to prepare a major feast full of turkey, and then sit around and watch football and catch up with family and friends. While these are certainly wonderful traditions - you will notice that physical activity usually doesn't make its way into the list.

If you are looking to improve your lifestyle to one that encourages healthy living, you and the entire family may want to consider a turkey trot. According to the American Council on Exercise, Thanksgiving is actually one of the most popular running days of the year and these races are available to exercisers from coast to coast, especially in major cities.

You don't have to be a seasoned marathoner to enjoy the benefits of a turkey trot either. Many of these races have 5K (3.1 mile) and 10K (6.2 mile) options, and with these types of exercise events become more popular across the country, many of your family members can join in on the fun as well. According to ACE, 1.3 million people participated in races in 2010, so to keep up with the latest fitness trends, this could be just the thing for you.

If you aren't a big fan of high-impact exercise or have sore joints, that's OK too, because many turkey trots will allow you to walk alongside the runners.

A great way to begin Turkey Day
If you are worried about missing the big meal, you needn't be. Many of these events take place in the morning, so you will be done with your race long before the turkey hits the table. Besides, you won't feel nearly as guilty going after that slice of pumpkin pie or hefty serving of sweet potatoes if you spent your morning breaking a sweat.

Great for you and your community
Getting involved with races in general is an excellent way to meet workout buddies or friends in general. Having people around you that support your healthy lifestyle with garcinia cambogia benefits is a big part of your weight loss motivation and success, and there is no better place to find like-minded people than a race. Almost all races will allow you to run for charity as well, and since it is the holidays, this is a wonderful opportunity to give back to your community.

If you can't make it to a turkey trot, that's OK too - but make sure you stay active on Thanksgiving by going on a family walk or bike ride after dinner - remember, every bit of exercise counts, even on Turkey Day.
