US obesity rate much higher than other countries

Obesity continues to be a major health issue for many Americans.
Obesity continues to be a major health issue for many Americans.

Healthy living requires work and a mindset toward balanced diet and exercise, and it seems that the U.S. is falling way short compared to other developed countries. For many Americans, this should serve as a wakeup call that the state of human health in America is waning.

Based on statistics from The World Factbook that were highlighted by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, the U.S. has the sixth-highest obesity rate in the world. The CIA stated that obesity was determined in individuals who had a body mass index of 30 or more.

While obesity rates in Canada, Ireland and the U.S. are continuing to rise, the pace has slowed, according to PBS. Although this is a promising sign, the U.S. still has a long way to go if it wants to adopt the normal obesity rates of other developed nations.

More than one-third of Americans are obese
One of the most startling facts that has come to the forefront in recent years is that more than one-third (35.7 percent) of Americans are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These numbers indicate that many Americans may need more than just a robust weight loss plan to get back on track. Such rates of obesity may require future treatment for several obesity-related diseases, including stroke, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

As an example, here are some obesity rates of other developed nations:

Australia: 21.7 percent
Iceland: 12.4 percent
Sweden: 9.7 percent
Italy: 8.5 percent
Switzerland: 7.7 percent
Japan: 3.2 percent

Not only is obesity dangerous, it's costly
The CDC indicated that there are monetary repercussions of being severely overweight. For example, the estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. in 2008 was $147 billion. Data also concluded that medical costs for an obese person were around $1,400 more compared to an individual with a healthy weight.
