Weight loss nutrition can bring about great health benefits for you on a personal level. However, there are many ways that the whole family can benefit from a few lifestyle changes if a balanced diet has fallen by the wayside.

Family meals are a way for you to sit down with your kids, talk about the day, turn off the TV and really listen to each other. It is also the time when your children will learn the most from you when it comes to eating habits, so it is very important to be a healthy living role model. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the disturbing trend of childhood obesity has continued to rise over the past two decades, so now is the time to get the entire family on track with a better diet.

Surround your house with healthy food
Keep unhealthy options - such as candy, chips and other items with little to no nutritional value - out the house and instead leave your kids and yourself with healthy foods to choose from. This doesn't mean that snacking or the occasional indulgence is completely off-limits for your kids - it just means that they will have more sustainable foods to choose from.

It is also a good idea to establish what can be eaten at any time, such as fruit, as well as what foods need permission, such as cookies. If possible, save the sweet and salty stuff for special occasions only - after all, it is called a treat for a reason. During meals, make sure that at least half of your family's plates are full of fruits and vegetables.

Get a handle on portion size
Kids are smaller, so it makes sense that they should eat less than the average full-grown adult. Keep smaller plates for your kids and don't force them to finish their meals if they are full, as this can contribute to overeating and establish bad habits. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, portion sizes should be around the back of the child's fist.

Stick to a schedule
Planning meals and snacks ahead of time can help the whole family from caving into less-than-optimal choices. If parents know what you are going to cook for dinner well ahead of time, they will be much less likely to cave into less nutritious dining options, such as fast-food restaurants.
