Many Americans are obese or overweight, and obesity has become a nationwide epidemic. An individual gets obese when they eat more calories than their body uses, making the difference between calories-in and calories-out significantly out of balance.

Obesity can have serious health effects such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and even some cancers. However, by losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight with weight loss help, you can greatly decrease your chances of developing these diseases.

Obesity plays a major role in mortality rate
Researchers found that 18 percent of deaths among Americans between the ages of 40 and 85 are due to obesity, HealthDay News reported. The study was published in the American Journal of Public Health.

The source said it was previously estimated that only 5 percent of deaths were obesity-related. The earlier estimates reportedly overlooked the generational differences of how the country's obesity epidemic has affected citizens.

"This was more than a tripling of the previous estimate," study author Ryan Masters told HealthDay News. "Obesity has dramatically worse health consequences than some recent reports have led us to believe."

The source also said younger generations have a greater likelihood of becoming obese and its accompanying health issues because they've been exposed to the risk factors for much longer. Since children are living in an environment where obesity is more normal than it was, they're exposed to larger drink sizes, bigger clothes and more obese classmates and peers.

For those born between 1915 and 1919, obesity accounted for 3.5 percent of deaths, HealthDay News reported. Obesity and related issues account for 5 percent of deaths for people born 10 years later (1919-1929) and another 7 percent for the generation born another 10 years later (between 1929 and 1939).

The study also found that women are more susceptible to dying from obesity than men are.
