Monday through Friday people committed to healthy living mostly try to stick to a balanced diet, especially if they're focusing on weight loss nutrition, and not indulge in too many sweet or salty treats.

There's good news though: A new study published in the journal Obesity Facts found that weight gained during the weekend is usually lost throughout the week, and healthy eating Monday through Friday compensates for less nutritious options on Saturday and Sunday.

"Regardless of who you are, there's a rhythm to the weight you lose," study author Brian Wansink, director of the Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab, told Reuters. "You're going to weigh the most on Sunday night and the least on Friday morning. You don't want to turn yourself into a glutton over the weekend, but realize that this seems to happen to almost everybody."

The research team examined self-taken daily weight records over the course of 10 months from 80 men and women between the ages of 25 and 62 who were separated into three groups: people who lost more than 3 percent of their body weight, people who gained more than 1 percent and those who maintained their weight.

Of the total participants, 18 lost weight, 10 added pounds and 52 stayed the same. What was interesting was that the group who lost weight displayed a rhythm of putting on extra pounds over the weekend, but then slimmed back down over the course of the week. While the day of the week predicted total weight in all three factions, the pattern was most consistent in those who ended up losing weight in the end, so the results confirm that long-term healthy eating habits outweigh short-term indulgences.

"Worry less about the weekends, and focus on the weekdays because that's when weight loss occurs. Just start minding your business on Monday morning," Wansink suggested.
